Robots set sail!

Tackling the challenges of sending autonomous machines into the blue.

Student-led Exploration

The furthest reaches of human exploration are pioneered by robots. At the Marine Robotics Group at Georgia Tech, students likewise partake in the development of autonomous maritime robots.

Learning

MRG provides an opportunity to learn new skills and work with tools for robotics, regardless of incoming skill level. We run a training program during the beginning of each semester.

Building

MRG has the goal of iterating on and creating new Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Autonomous Surfaces Vehicle (ASVs).

Testing

MRG frequently tests robots at lakes near Georgia Tech in preparation for various competitions and challenges.

Ongoing Projects

trigger: 1

Microtransat

For this challenge, we are constructing a small non-motor-propelled boat which will cross the Atlantic Ocean autonomously. We aim to be the first collegiate team to successfully attempt this challenge, and we are currently working on prototyping our vessel.

RoboBoat

For this competition, we build and program a surface vehicle to complete a series of tasks autonomously. The competition takes place annually, and we placed 3rd last time around in Sarasota, FL.

RobotX

For this competition, we develop the autonomy and propulsion for a 16-foot pontoon boat. We also create an autonomous drone which the surface vehicle collaborates with to complete tasks. The competition is biannual and was last held in Sydney, Australia.

RoboSub

For this competition, we build and program an underwater vehicle to complete a series of tasks autonomously. The competition takes place annually, and we planning on entering it in 2024 after a four year hiatus.
